Training for Conflict Resolution

In this article, Rebecca Wolff and Jenette Nagy wrote about steps to resolve the conflict, they give an example of conflict and show how to behave in a different situations. The goal of the conflict is to come up with the acceptable solution through negotiation. It is important to understand why, when and how to resolve the conflict.  

The article presents seven steps that assist in the conflict resolution: 

1. Understand the conflict  

The main point of the first step is understanding why the disagreement occurred, what outcomes are expected and why is this important for both sides.  

2. Communicate with the opposition 

The second step is communication, everyone should listen, be respectful and try understand the point of view of each other without judging.  

3. Brainstorm possible resolutions 

After positions have been clarified, set up the meeting, make sure the purpose of the meeting is clear for everyone, find someone neutral to organize the meeting, and make a safe environment where people feel comfortable to share their ideas for the possible solution.  

4. Choose the best resolution 

Out of all ideas for resolution, choose the best resolution that gives both parties the most. 

5. Use a third party mediator 

Using third party mediator may be helpful for evaluating the resolution, as they can look on a situation from the other side and give their expert opinion.  

6. Explore alternatives 

In case if the chosen solution it doesn’t work out, authors suggest to brainstorm for few alternatives. 

7. Cope with stressful situations and pressure tactics 

In the last step, Rebecca and Jenette writing  that in the situation when opponent is unreasonable,  they suggests stay calm and go slow.
